Provincetown:
Poised at the very tip of Cape Cod, jutting far out into the Atlantic, Provincetown is geographically unique, literally surrounded by water with the Atlantic on one side and Cape Cod Bay on the other. The compact fishing village is the site of the first Pilgrim landing in 1620. Visitors can climb to the top of the Pilgrim Monument, which stands to mark their historic landing, to enjoy panoramic views of the harbour and the Cape Cod National Seashore. Silvery clapboard houses, with gloriously unruly gardens, line its tiny winding streets. Provincetown is far from secluded: its population of five thousand rises tenfold in summer. Self-professed bohemians and artists have always flocked here for the dazzling light and vast beaches, and in 1914 Eugene O`Neill established the Provincetown Playhouse in a small hut. Provincetown is a haven for recreation enthusiasts and whale watchers alike. During the whales` migratory season, between April and October, whale watching tours are abundant. Some would ascribe the inspiration to the quality of the light (and it is particularly lovely -- soft and diffuse) or the solitude afforded by long, lonely winters. But the general atmosphere of open-mindedness plays at least as pivotal a role, allowing a very varied assortment of individuals to pull together in pushing the cultural envelope. The wide variety of accommodations available in Provincetown prove this town knows that each trip is different, each traveler unique. During peak season, Provincetown`s streets are a celebration of the individual`s freedom to be as out as imagination allows. This isolated outpost has always been a magnet for the adventurous minded. Provincetown welcomes all visitors with a journey through huge sand dunes as you enter town. This area is known for its vast beaches, including Herring Cove Beach and Race Point. P-town`s rich history of individualism come to life in the many shops and businesses lining Commercial Street, along with the patrons who visit them. Bike trails running through its large dunes and whalewatching excursions leave on a daily basis from the wharf area. Those who`ve settled in Provincetown (affectionately referred to as `P-town` know they`ve found a very special place, and in that, they have something precious in common. Provincetown`s famous `quality of light,` in the sky, in the sea, in the air all around you, becomes even more pronounced as autumn`s days run towards winter. It`s the perfect season for long hikes, kayaking afternoons and cozy dinners with friends. The weekends in late autumn and early winter are dedicated to a variety of special theme gatherings and events: the Fall Arts Festival, the Fantasia Fair, Women`s Week, Entre Nous, The Roundup, Single Men`s Weekend and finally Holly Folly - the world`s only Gay and Lesbian Christmas celebration. And during the Holidays, life revs up again as the shops begin their seasonal sales and the weekends find the streets filled again with eager shoppers, many driving 100 miles or more, just to find a unique bargain in Provincetown. P-Town remains a place where history, natural beauty and, above all, difference, are respected and celebrated.
